Bảy võ sĩ đạo kể câu chuyện về một ngôi làng nhỏ thuần nông mà mỗi khi mùa gặt đến luôn bị bọn rợ quấy rối, cướp lương thực và cả phụ nữ. Đến ngày nọ, dân làng quyết định đã đến lúc phải vùng lên chống trả bọn vô lại. Sau một cuộc họp, dân làng xin ý kiến vị bô lão lớn tuổi nhất và ông đề nghị họ nên thuê các võ sĩ đạo. Ý tưởng này được số đông chấp nhận và 4 thanh niên trai tráng được cử đi tìm các nhà hiệp sĩ. Nỗ lực của họ gần như thất bại, không tìm ra người thích hợp, đúng lúc chán nản họ gặp được một samurai mà họ tin rằng hoàn hảo. Đó là Kambei (Takashi Shimura đóng). Nhưng võ sĩ này cho biết, một mình ông không đủ sức đương đầu, mà phải tìm thêm 6 người nữa cho đủ 7 người (chưa kể cậu môn sinh). Cuộc tìm kiếm kết thúc với 5 samurai chính hiệu và một samurai thứ 7 không có danh phận rõ rang bí danh Kikuchiyo, được tuyển mộ nhờ lẽo đẽo theo nhóm với bộ mặt say khướt, nhưng tinh thần chiến đấu trừ gian thì không ai bằng. Nhân vật võ sĩ đạo nhiều chất hài này do diễn viên gạo cội Toshiro Mifune từng nổi tiếng với bộ phim Yojimbo đóng. Ngoài Kikuchiyo tay kiếm Kyuzo (do Seiji Miyaguchi đóng) với những đường kiếm hào hoa cũng rất được khán giả yêu thích. Nông dân Rikichi (Yoshio Tsuchiya), trưởng nhóm trai làng tìm samurai, một người phẫn uất vì bị cướp mất vợ cũng gây ấn tượng. Nhưng diễn viên Seiji Miyaguchi đóng vai kiếm sĩ bậc thầy Kyuzo được xem là nhập vai tốt nhất.

Các samurai bố trí hệ thống phòng thủ trong làng và tổ chức dân làng đối phó với bọn cướp. Khi mọi sự đã chuẩn bị xong xuôi, bọn cướp bắt đầu xuất hiện theo kiểu “đến hẹn lại lên”, nhưng chúng không những chẳng lấy được gì mà còn bị dân làng hiệp lực cùng các võ sĩ đánh cho tơi tả. Chúng phản công nhiều lần cũng thất bại. Tuy nhiên có 4 samurai bị giết trong các trận giáp chiến. Hòa bình được tái lập, bọn cướp bị quét sạch, các samurai sống sót lại lên đường để tiếp tục lối sống lang bạt kỳ hồ, thay vì định cư tại làng.

Phim của Kurosawa thì nổi tiếng quá rồi, ko chỉ dân Nhật gần như ai cũng biết, mà cả người phương Tây cũng biết đến ông rất nhiều. Seven Samurai là phim nổi tiếng Nhất của ông, và ông cũng rất thích làm phim đen trắng, trong số hơn 20 bộ phim nổi tiếng Nhất, thì cũng có đến 5-6 phim đen trắng, trong đó tôi mới được xem Seven Samurai và Ikiru, còn một số phim về thời cách tân của Nhật (cái thời mà người ta mặc cả đồ Tây lẫn đồ truyền thống ấy, ko mặc kimono nữa, mà mặc váy liền thân, hơi bó) nhìn thấy ngoài hàng nhưng chưa mua được. Có vẻ như Kurosawa có biệt tài trong việc thể hiện tư tưởng và lễ giáo, đạo đức thông qua những nét văn hóa rất Nhật. Một số phim xem hơi nặng nề (phim này là một ví dụ), nhưng xem xong, chắc chắn người ta ko thể nguôi suy nghĩ về nó trong vài ngày.

Có một giải thưởng mang tên Akira Kurosawa, nhưng nghe nói nó chỉ là một giải thưởng nhỏ. ^____^ Dù sao, điều đó cũng đã giúp ông lưu lại tên tuổi đến ngàn đời sau, với những cống hiến vĩ đại của mình cho nền điện ảnh.

The first color film by Kurosawa made in 1971.

"This one tends to get slighted by a lot of critics and Kurosawa fans, but I thought it was wonderful. It's an episodic multi-character study of Tokyo's poorest, who live in a city literally made from garbage. Though it looks like an A-Bomb just hit, the film has a sort of serene beauty thanks to the glorious use of Technicolor. The title comes from the sound made by the insane young man who drives an imaginary trolley through the slum. All the characters were wonderful and all the stories engrossing, but perhaps the most tragic concerns the man and his young son who live in an abandoned car. When not searching for food, they spend their spare time using their imagination to build their dream house. An emotionally moving and beautiful film."

Another masterpiece of master Kurosawa....

"Classic samurai action pic; often imitated but never equalled. Mifune creates a memorable character (who appeared in a sequel) in the Ronin who decides the course of his life on the toss of a stick, and ends up risking his life to save a village full of peasants he finds revolting. It's possible to see "Yojimbo's" actions as either heroic or as the game of a bored warrior in need of amusement -- as often in Kurosawa's films, the fact that the characters' motives remain open to interpretation adds depth to the film.

Wonderful images, and skillful direction that keeps the pace of the storytelling tight and tells most of the story through images -- this is the kind of film that is so good it can be watched a silent film without losing too much of its impact or meaning.

I think that if Kurosawa had spent more of his time in litigation and less making movies, he might have made a living for the rest of his life off all the movies that have ripped off this movie. Certainly Eastwood's "Man with No Name" character owes a lot to Mifune's contribution; not only in Leone's films (the first of which borrows its entire plot from Kurosawa; a court settlement ensued which made sure Kurosawa made most of the profits from "Fistful of Dollars" in Asia his own) but also in Eastwood's best film as a director -- "High Plains Drifter", which borrows scenes such as Eastwood's rebuke of the villagers from "Yojimbo". "

The film lacks the meticulous visual style of Yojimbo, but it is very well photographed, with some extremely fluid cinematography and those effortlessly artful group compositions that only Kurosawa seems to be able to do. The plot is a little exposition-heavy, but it's always swift-moving and never comes close to taking itself seriously.

Sanjuro is another in a long line of purely classic films by Akira Kurosawa. This movie was made on a whim on the heels of the wildly successful Yojimbo, but Kurosawa doesn't simply whip out a movie to satisfy the audience; he creates another film masterpiece. This is a farcical comedy shot with the same brilliance as Ran--take a minute and notice how perfectly the image on the screen portrays what Kurosawa wants us to see. Nothing about this film is a mistake, something that he would want to do over. Watch this film!

"When I saw this movie, I remembered Louis-Ferdinand Celine's book, "Journey to the End of the Night", a anti-war book. Reading reviews about the movie, listening to what people in the US had to say, seeing the reaction of the American media to this movie, I was sad, simply sad. This movie is not about Japan, it's not about America, it could have been anywhere a war had happened.

This movie is a poem against war and the scars it leaves forever deep in the mind of the people who suffered those wars. Those who didn't suffer a war are lucky, and shouldn't be blamed for being this lucky, but they should see movies like this to understand what war is about. The world is never better after war. The first ones to agree to settle things through warfare are the ones who didn't suffer war. There are no winners in a war, just remember.

I'm sorry that all those who felt attacked in their pride as Americans are missing the point of this movie. If your father or your grandfather, or your friend has been to war, just listen to them.

"In a pre-WWII Tokyo, the professor of German Hyakken Uchida (Tatsuo Matsumura) decides to retire after thirty years of professorship, and dedicate to the career of writer. His students, some of them from different generations, love him and keep a close touch with the professor and his wife (Kyôko Kagawa) along his life. In 1943, the house of the professor is bombed, he loses all his possessions and moves to a simple gardener cottage. After the war, his former students build a new small house with a lake around, and every year along seventeen years, in the professor's birthday, they have a reunion with a funny ceremony, based on children's hide and seek and referring if the professor is ready to die. They ask the professor: "-Mahda-kai?" ("Are you ready?"), and the professor responds "-Madadayo!" ("Not yet?") and drinks a large glass of beer."

"Madadayo" is the last direction of Master Akira Kurosawa, and is a sensitive low-paced worship of knowledge, friendship and life. I found this movie very beautiful, and I would like to highlight some points. First of all, the character of the professor Hyakken Uchida, capable of be adored by his students of different generations, very connected to a cat, living with his beloved wife but without kids. There is no explanation, but it seems quite contradictory a man of such profile not having son or daughter. Another interesting point is the changing of behavior of Japanese society with women (and family) along time. In the sixty-first anniversary of the professor (First Madadayo), there are only men in the meeting room, in spite of war finished a few years ago. Seventeen years later, the room is crowded of men, women and children. The conclusion of the story, showing that life goes on, is awesome! Last but not the least, the music score is magnificent. My vote is nine."

Theo các học giả nghiên cứu lịch sử điện ảnh Nhật Bản, đạo diễn Akira Kurosawa nảy ra ý định làm Seven Samurai khi ông vô tình đọc được câu chuyện về một làng thuê võ sĩ đạo để bảo vệ mùa màng. Bộ phim không chỉ có ý nghĩa với nền điện ảnh Nhật Bản, mà còn là cứu tinh đối với hãng Toho, bởi trước đó họ đang ở bên bờ vực phá sản vì sự thất bại của Gojira (cũng phát hành năm 1954). Chính vì gặp khó khăn về tài chính mà hãng đã mấy lần định từ bỏ dự án làm phim vì không đủ kinh phí. Tuy nhiên, khi Seven Samurai được tung ra rạp, nó đã trở thành bộ phim đạt doanh thu cao nhất thế kỷ 20 ở xứ Phù Tang (hơn 500.000 USD vào thời điểm năm 1954).

Seven Samurai thường được các nhà phê bình và báo chí coi là bộ phim có ảnh hưởng lớn nhất đối với thể loại phim hành động hiện đại. Một bộ phim ra đời năm 1954. Lần đầu tiên mình được xem là ở Hanoi cinémathèque, vốn không có ấn tượng về điện ảnh của Nhật vậy mà bộ phim đã trở thành mục tiêu cho bộ sưu tập phim của mình. Sau đó đi tìm mãi trên mạng Cachan, vậy mà chẳng có ai có. Hôm nọ đi xem bọn Tàu diễu hành ở Hotel de ville rồi ghé qua của hàng băng đĩa mua luôn về xem lại.

Bộ phim kể về những người nông dân khổ cực của một ngôi làng. Do tình cờ 1 người đi kiếm củi nghe được cuộc trò chuyện của bọn cướp mà biết được bọp cướp sẽ tấn công làng sau vụ thu hoạch lúa. Những người nông dân cả đời nghèo khổ, họ sợ tất cả từ mưa, gió, nắng... cho đến cả những người lạ, những người đến để giúp đỡ họ. Cuộc sống khó khăn, vất vả và cái nghèo đã biến họ thành những con người sợ sệt, chỉ biết chịu đựng. Họ biết làm gì khi thấy trước được cái gì sẽ đến mà bất lực, không chống lại được. Già làng chỉ cho họ một lối thoát duy nhất là đi mời các samourais về bảo vệ cho làng.

Kikuchiyo

Nhưng họ biết lấy gì để thuê các samourais đây, khi họ đến cái ăn còn thiếu. Bốn người đàn ông của làng được cử đi để tìm samourai. Nhiều samourai khi được đề nghị đã coi đó là một điều sỉ nhục với họ. Nhưng chính sự cùng cực của họ, những người ăn kê để dành cơm cho các samourais đã thuyết phục được Kambei, một samourai mạnh mẽ, dày dạn kinh nghiệm. Với uy tín của ông, họ đã tìm được thêm 6 samourais nữa:

+ Kyuzo một samourai lão luyện, nhanh nhẹn trong các trận đánh, giấu tấm lòng yêu thương của mình dưới cái vẻ lạnh lùng, khó gần.
+ Kikuchiyo một anh chàng bắng nhắng với danh vị samourai do chính anh đặt cho mình.

Tất cả họ đến ngôi làng để chuẩn bị cho một trận đánh không có vinh quang, không tiền, không phần thưởng và chỉ được đảm bảo 3 bữa cơm một ngày. Nhưng trận đánh chỉ diễn ra gần cuối phim, còn phần lớn thời gian bộ phim cho ta thấy cuộc sống và tính cách của những người nông dân, những người bao giờ cũng là tầng lớp thấp nhất của xã hội. Và trận đánh cũng bắt đầu với đúng cái khắc nghiệt của chiến tranh khi Heihachi trúng đạn trong cuộc đột kích đốt căn cứ bọn cướp. Và rồi Kikuchiyo ôm đứa bé vừa mới mất cả bố mẹ lẫn ông vì bọn cướp, gục xuống gào lên "Tôi đã từng là đứa bé này".

Kyuzo

Tất cả 7 samourais cùng với những người nông dân quen cam chịu dựng chiến luỹ chống lại với 40 tên cướp cùng 3 khẩu súng. Và rồi từng người trong số họ ngã xuống. Gorobei gục ngã trên con đường vào làng khi chặn bọn cướp. Kyuzo trúng đạn bắn lén của tên cầm đầu toán cướp trong trận đánh cuối cùng. Kikuchiyo xông lên để trả thù cũng bị trúng đạn, anh đâm nhát kiếm cuối cùng của đời anh vào tên cướp rồi nằm hẳn xuống. Khi những tên cướp cuối cùng bị tiêu diệt Katsushiro kiệt sức, quỳ xuống khóc dưới trời mưa còn Kambei nói với Shichiroji "Một lần nữa, chúng ta lại sống sót".

Những ngôi mộ của họ nằm ở trên đồi, bên cạnh những ngôi mộ khác. Ta có thể dễ dàng nhận ra 4 ngôi mộ đó nhờ cây kiếm của họ cắm trên ngôi mộ nổi lên trên nền trời.

Điểm yếu của phim đó là trong những cảnh đánh nhau, ta không thấy những mũi tên, mũi giáo đâm lút vào người, không thấy máu vương lại trên lưỡi kiếm. Chính điều đó không đem lại vẻ không thật lắm cho những pha giết người. Âu cũng là điểm yếu của điện ảnh thời đó. Bù lại, một kịch bản hay với diễn xuất tuyệt vời của các diễn viên đã đem lại cho phim giải Sư tử bạc tại Liên hoan phim Venise năm 1955.
